Buona visione. Daniele

Your Guide to the Zelkova Bonsai

!±8± Your Guide to the Zelkova Bonsai

The Zelkova bonsai is a common variety of bonsai that is especially popular for its resistant to infestations and diseases. This factor makes it an easy tree to grow. The most common shape that you will find in a Zelkova bonsai is the broom or hokidachi style as it is called in Japanese.

The two most popular varieties of the Zelkova bonsai are the Japanese Grey Bark elm and the Chinese Zelkova. The former has a vigorous growth rate. The Chinese Zelkova is a smaller version of the Japanese Zelkova and has a bark that of a brown or grey color.

Water and sunlight

The Zelkova bonsai, like all other bonsais require proper watering. Since it is potted in a small area, it will require watering often. However, do not water it too much. The Zelkova does not like wet feet, especially during winter. Ideally, you should water the bonsai in the morning and then leave it alone for the rest of the day.

During summer, you can mist the bonsai a few times through the day.

The Zelkova requires sunlight and so, it must be kept in a place where it can get partial or full sunlight. During the summer months however, you should keep it in partial shade, to avoid the leaves becoming dry.

Feeding and Fertilizer

A balanced fertilization is imperative to the proper growth of your bonsai. Half dose fertilization can be done every week, or a full dose every alternate week. You can use a natural fertilizer on your tree from spring to fall without any worry.

Infestations and diseases

A healthy Zelkova bonsai is capable of resisting a number of diseases and pests. So ensure that you do not weaken the tree with repeated wounds and cuts.

Potting

Apart from all these, remember that the Zelkova bonsai requires repotting early in the spring and this should be done every year. However, when the tree grows older, you can repot every couple of years. The Zelkova requires deep pots with fertile and well-drained soil.

Other factors

You can train a Zelkova bonsai to replicate the natural growth of a full-grown Zelkova tree. You can make use of bonsai wires, strings and sticks to achieve this effect. Small curves can also be created in the tree by attaching small bamboo terraces to the branches.

However, while using the wires on the Zelkova bonsai, be careful, as the branches of this tree are thin and fragile.
